Letter by Kurdish writer Kamal Mirawdeli to British Prime Minister Theresa May and British Foreign Secretary.
The Rt. Honourable Theresa May, MP
Prime Minister
Office of the Prime Minister
10 Downing Street London SW1A 2AA
Dear Prime Minister,
Genocide and massacre of civilians in towns and villages of Afrin.
What is happening in Afrin is real genocide and against whom? Civilians, villages and areas that have been stable and supported thousands of refugees, against all Kurdish people, against YPG fighters, women and men who have heroically fought and defeated Daesh (ISIL) on behalf of you, me and all humanity. Kurdish women fighters are the most brave, selfless and sacred people on the face of earth today. It is a crime that history and humanity and of course our Kurdish people will never forget that UK is not only turning a blind eye to this genocide of Kurds by Turkey AGAIN but openly supports Erdogan through the shameful stand of Boris Johnson and signing arms deals with Turkey.
Every minute children are dying. The human situation for the families and civilians is horrific and tragic. Turkey is using napalm and other prohibited weapons to destroy villages and communities. Turkey has openly declared Jihad, holy war, against the Kurds of Syria, and openly declared again and again that the aim of their Olive Branch military invasion is ethnic cleansing and replacing Kurds in their historical homeland with Arabs and Turkomans.
It is sad and shameful that Britain again reiterated Turkey’s right to protect its national security and borders. I agree with this too. But how? By negotiating with Kurds or by attacking Afrin city and areas which for the last six years have been the most stable and peaceful city and area in Syria and accommodation over 30000 refugees from other parts, a city which is an example for diversity and peaceful coexistence. Turkey attack it only because it is a Kurdish city and Erdogan has not hidden his Nazist racist hatred of Kurds everywhere in the world which UK so shamefully accepts and collaborate with.
The situation is urgent and requires urgent action and I believe UK in a position to do something about it. URGENTLY. NOW.
If Turkish army and Islamist fundamentalists of al-Nusra and ISIS under the banner of so-called Free Syrian Army occupy Afrin, is certain that there will be a genocide. Turkey wants to pave the way for its occupation as has done so far in other towns and villages by carpet bombing and scorched earth practice.
The British government should act with UHN, US and Nato to declare Afrin city skies a NO-FLY ZONE. This will pave the way for a political solution too.
Now there is a UN mandate for ceasefire and stopping violence in all Syria. So, UK as member of UNSC, Nato, EU and a historical player in the Middle East, should be able to achieve this goal immediately especially as Turkey is too a member of Nato.
It is ridiculous to claim that a no-fly zone for a foreign state indulging in illegal occupation, invasion and genocide in ANOTHER SOVEREIGN COUNTRY is not feasible.
Following the shooting down of a Russian jet, Putin enforced a no-fly Syrian space for Turkish aircraft for almost a year. And did the same for 5 days following the shooting down of a second Russian plane buy the Islamists.
The situation is extremely tragic.
1. In the face of the heroic Stalingrad resistance of Kurdish women and men fighters, the Turkish army has stalled and suffered huge losses. It could not advance. Eventually Endogen has resorted to total Scorched Earth War. And recruited ISIS to lead holy war against the Kurds. It is genocide. It is indiscriminate killing. I don’t understand why the mass murder of Other peoples’ children, parents, sisters and brothers is so normal to you. And criminal BBC and British media too ignore Afrin genocide while all attentions is on East Ghouta which of course deserves attention and condemnation and stopping of Russia, Iran and Syria’s massacres there too as well as in Afrin.
2. In East Ghouta it is obvious there are al-Nusra, Jaysh al-Islam and even ISIS who have enslaved and abused the civilians who desperately want to be free from them. And they have many times indiscriminately bombed Damascus. Yet you don’t acknowledge that the sovereign government of Syrian has right to regain control of its city and push away the terrorists. Yet under the excuse of national security, you allow a criminal self-declared Hitler to invade the sovereign land of another country and indulge in scorched earth and genocide of its peaceful population who offered their blood, lives and children to defeat ISIS and other terrorists.
3. Turkey has no legal excuse to invade Syria and murder Kurds who have never posed any threat to Turkey and never attacked any civilian or military target inside Turkey. A legal study by the Legal Committee of the German Parliament has concluded that Turkey is violating international law and has no legal argument for invading Afrin and massacring Kurds.
4. Kurds in Syria and YPG and Syrian Democratic forces are the people who sacrificed everything to defeat ISIS and did. They liberated Raqqa the capital of the Fascist Islamic Caliphate. They liberated Der-al-Zur. They hold hundreds of the most criminal ISIS prisoners, a proof that they did the job, including two criminal so-called Beatles be-headers whom British government has even refused to take them and try them in the UK.
The jihadist ‘Beatles’: Britons who became the face of Isis cruelty
Four Londoners’ depravity was showcased in shocking videos. Now the last two are in captivity.
It is ironic that the West created a coalition of 60 countries to fight and defeat ISIS, but the Kurds did the job, and now the West offers Kurdish children and women as sacrificial lambs to the same ISIS they defeated and their Godfather Erdogan. It is shameful that no one even wants to take the prisoners whom the Kurds treated humanely and in line with human rights instead of massacring them,.
Syrian Kurds hold hundreds of foreign IS… and no one wants them back
Kurd officials appeal for help to deal with dangerous captives – not one of their European allies has agreed to take them.
5. Kurds are again victimized in a cruel geopolitical game and struggle to control energy resources. It was US who triggered the Turkish aggression by declaring its plan to create a 30,000 strong Syrian Security Force from SDF. So US must face the consequences of its plans and not so cowardly and cruelly sacrifice Kurds.
6. Finally, I quote the following from an article in the Guardian to shed some light on the background of all these I hope you read it and try to learn something from it:
[[[[ Three years ago the world watched a ragtag band of men and women fighters in the Syrian town of Kobane, most armed only with Kalashnikovs, hold off a vast army of Islamist militants with tanks, artillery and overwhelming logistical superiority. The defenders insisted they were acting in the name of revolutionary feminist democracy. The Islamist fighters vowed to exterminate them for that very reason. When Kobane’s defenders won, it was widely hailed as the closest one can come, in the contemporary world, to a clear confrontation of good against evil.
Today, exactly same thing is happening again. Except this time, world powers are firmly on the side of the aggressors. In a bizarre twist, those aggressors seem to have convinced key world leaders and public opinion-makers that Kobane’s citizens are “terrorists” because they embrace a radical version of ecology, democracy and women’s rights.
The region in question is Afrin, defended by the same YPG and YPJ (People’s Protection and Women’s Protection Units) who defended Kobane, and who afterwards were the only forces in Syria willing to take the battle to the heartland of Islamic State, losing thousands of combatants in the battle for its capital, Raqqa.
An isolated pocket of peace and sanity in the Syrian civil war, famous only for the beauty of its mountains and olive groves, Afrin’s population had almost doubled during the conflict as hundreds of thousands of mostly Arab refugees had come to shelter with its original, overwhelmingly Kurdish population.
At the same time its inhabitants had taken advantage of their peace and stability to develop the democratic principles embraced throughout the majority Kurdish regions of north Syria, known as Rojava. Local decisions were devolved to neighbourhood assemblies in which everyone could participate; other parts of Rojava insisted on strict gender parity, with every office having co-chairs, male and female, in Afrin, two-thirds of public offices are held by women.
Today, this democratic experiment is the object of an entirely unprovoked attack by Islamist militias including Isis and al-Qaida veterans, and members of Turkish death squads such as the notorious Grey Wolves, backed by the Turkish army’s tanks, F16 fighters, and helicopter gunships. Like Isis before them, the new force seems determined to violate all standards of behaviour, launching napalm attacks on villagers, attacking dams – even, like Isis, blowing up irreplaceable archaeological monuments. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the president of Turkey, has announced, “We aim to give Afrin back to its rightful owners”, in a thinly veiled warning to ethnically cleanse the region of its Kurdish inhabitants. And only today it emerged that a convoy heading to Afrin carrying food and medicine was shelled by Turkish forces.
Remarkably, the YPG and YPJ have so far held off the invaders. But they have done so without so much as the moral support of a single major world power. Even the US, the presence of whose forces prevents Turkey from invading those territories in the east, where the YPG and YPJ are still engaged in combat with Isis, has refused to lift a finger to defend Afrin. The British foreign secretary Boris Johnson has gone so far as to insist that “Turkey has the right to want to keep its borders secure” – by which logic he would have no objection if France were to seize control of Dover.]]]]]
Please consider the morality and meaning of your policy towards the Kurds now and historically.
The UK has for long lost every bit of morality, dignity and humanity.
Britain is in fact the birthplace and capital of Islamist Fascism from Muslim Brotherhood, to Hizb-al-Tahrir, al-Muhajiroun, al-Qaeda and Isis.
Every crime and massacre committed by any Islamist group in the world has had a link to UK from the massacres of France and Belgium to the many murders of secular intellectuals in Bangladesh.
Now Erdogan implements a very dangerous Nazi-style Islamist Ottoman agenda and UK supports him, covertly and in action.
Erdogan has declared his War against Kurds and Afrin as jihad, holy war, and all Turkish mosques every Friday have been instructed to prayer for the victory of Turkish army and mercenaries against infidel Kurds.
Turkey has big historical ambitions in Syria. He has openly declared his war against Kurds as Ethnic Cleansing, elimination Kurds and replacing them in their land with Sunni Arabs and Turkomans, that is al-Nusra and Isis groups.
Under Erdogan and his extremist Islamist Ottoman government Turkey is fast developing to a new but far more dangerous than Nazi Germany in terms of religious ideology, history and geographical extension.
It threatens Cyprus, Greece and Egypt and extends its Islamist fundamentalist Jihadist ideology and scheme to Asian and African countries.
Turkish invasion of Afrin is against International Law, sovereignty of Syria, and human rights.
UK should stand for the Rule of law and Respect of International Law and Human Rights everywhere.
UK and Europe are indebted to Kurds who have given their blood generously and courageously to defeat ISIS.
Shame on the British government and politicians for their criminal silence as they watch those who defeated Isis their homes ruined, and their children being massacred, and their brave and sacred female fighters have needlessly to die to defend them.
The Kurdish people do love the English people despite many historical injustices.
But I have lost trust in your humanity, so I will not plead with you to do anything. And even if millions of Kurds do, you would not do anything. You are below morality and decency for me to plead with you. I just want you to know that we, the Kurds do know, who you are, what you have been and are, and surely this time we will not forget, and history will not forget.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Kamal Mirawdeli
